MRS. HARRIET ELIZABETH HARRINGTON
On 17th August, 1898, Mrs. Harriet E. Harrington (nee Hudson) died at the residence of her son, Capt. John W. Harrington, in Darlington County. Thus ended the life of a remarkable woman. She was born in 1804 and lacked but a few days of completing her 95 years. Her life covered the period of 4 wars, that of 1812, the Mexican War, the Civil War, and the Cuban War, and up to a year or two ago was in good health. She was the only sister of the late Professor J. W. Hudson who, as President of Mount Zion College at Winnsboro, S.C., did so much in moulding sentiment in S. C. by educating such men as Gen. Maxcy Gregg (a relative), Gen. M.C. Butler, Gen. M.W. Gary, Col. J.M. White, and a host of others. She was the mother of Mrs. M.E. Banks, Fort Mill, S.C., and grandmother of Mrs. J.B. Mack and Prof. A.R. Banks, and lived to see 15 of her great-grandchildren.
During the Civil War she was captured by Gen. Grant's gunboats on the Mississippi River while returning from a visit to her son's family in Arkansas, being suspect as a spy, she was held as a prisoner of war for several days, and was forced to have her private luggage searched. She severely reprimanded the officer in charge for this act of indignity to a Southern woman and refused to accept an apology, declining to accept a cup of tea or coffee of their hands.
Mrs. Harrington's remains were laid to rest in the old family graveyard at Mt. Zion Church in Sumter County. She leaves a large family of children, grand-children, great-grand-children, and great-great-grand-children.
