His funeral service was a fitting tribute: he received full military honors and in lieu of a hearse he rode his "last ride" on the back of a 1930's fire engine.Local businesses lowered their flags to half mast as the cortege,which also included fire apparatus from several communities, passed through the waterfront streets. At the conclusion of the graveside service the engine hand bell was rung, a signal that was used to "call the men back home". Few who knew him could ever forget him. His true epitaph should have read, "His bark was worse than his bite."
