Government Minister. Founder of the FNM. National Hero. Sir Cecil Vincent Wallace-Whitfield, KT, LLB, MP, NH was the first, and long-time, leader of the Free National Movement, a political party established in the Bahamas in 1971 as the country moved towards Independence in the heady summer of 1973. The formation of the FNM secured a viable two-party system that has endured for fifty years. Born March 20th, 1930 in Nassau to Kenneth Whitfield and Dorothy Wallace Rogers, Cecil was educated at the University of Hull, England and Middle Temple, London. He returned home and became one of the men and women who led the struggle for majority rule and equality in The Bahamas. He won election to the country's first majority-rule government and was appointed Minister of Works. He aimed to bring infrastructure - street lights and roads and schools - to all the communities in the Commonwealth. Cecil Wallace-Whitfield was knighted by the Queen in August 1989 for service to the Bahamian people as a Member of Parliament, government minister, and opposition leader. In 2018, he was posthumously awarded the Order of National Hero (NH).
