Mary Norsworthy Shepard Whiteley, Washington D.C. died in March, 2010, at her residence in Washington D.C. She also attended Georgetown University where she finished her thesis on Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt, but her mother, Mrs. Richard Peyton Whiteley (Mary N. S. Whiteley) decided they would move to Freiburg, Germany in the mid 1930s for my mother Mary N.S.W. Parker to study further her German language skills, in order to enter into further degree studies in Berlin. They both left when Poland was attacked by Germany, traveling to England, and later back to the United States. My mother had lived in Spain for a year or two immediately after the Spanish revolution. During WWII, after their return to the United States, she lived for a year in Mexico City, studying at the University of Mexico. She later on was one of the first women U.S. State Department Officers in Latin America, where she served in Lima, Peru, prior to her marriage to R. W. Parker.
