Pfc. Walter G. Hock, Merrill, was killed in action Nov 19 in France, according to a war department message received by his parents Sunday morning. The 19-year-old youth was serving with the field artillery unit of the 3rd army at the time of his death.
Hock entered service April 13, 1943, while a student in the Merrill High School. He received military training at Camp Grant, Ill., Camp Phillips, Kan., and in Nashville, Tenn., before going overseas.
The Merrill youth saw action in the battle for the Gilbert Islands and had received the Purple Heart for wounds received last January in Arawe, New Britain.
After a furlough at home, he was transferred to the east coast and then sent overseas. He entered France on D-Day.
Born in New York City Dec. 20, 1924, Hock came with his parents to Merrill while a child.
