Virginia Beach -- Dr. Wallace A. Rogers, 85, went home with his Lord on Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, after an extended illness.
Dr. Rogers was born in New Albany, Ind., on Nov. 26, 1913. He was the son of the late Col. Ralph and Etta Rogers. He received his electrical engineering degree from Purdue University. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Dr. Rogers was led by his Lord to enter the Union Theological Seminary in Richmond and earned his doctorate degree. He served seven years as pastor of Laburnum Presbyterian Church in Richmond and for 17 years at Norview Presbyterian Church in Norfolk. Dr. Rogers managed the John Knox Towers for several years and did supply preaching at numerous churches in the area.
Dr. Rogers is survived by his wife, Nellie K. Rogers; two daughters, Carol R. Dale and Helen R. Scherger, both of Virginia Beach; two stepdaughters, Barbara A. Umphlett of Virginia Beach and Sharon L. Howard of Yorktown; a stepson, Robert L. Wheaton Jr. of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Rosewood Memorial Park. Friends may join the family today from 7 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Providence Presbyterian Church.
