Services were held at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, with burial following service.

John was born near Milo and had lived in Warren County all his life. He was retired from Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. in Des Moines, and had farmed and co-owned and operated a senior citizen boarding home. He was a charter member of the Indianola Christian Union Church. He was active in his church and enjoyed gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Leta; a son, Glenn (Carol), and three daughters, Karma (Gordon)Wilkinson, Betty (Johnny)Bumgarner and Shirley (Laverne)Zimmerman, all of Indianola; a stepson, Gerald (Karrylle) Curnes of Moscow, ID; a stepdaughter, Charlotte (Ted) Noddin of Coos Bay, OR; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mayme.
