He resided in Cleveland County, as a farmer prior to enlisting at age 37. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant of the 55th North Carolina Infantry Regiment, Company D on March 29, 1862. Reported present on June 1862. Resigned on September 16, 1862, by reason of "chronic dyspepsia." Resignation accepted on September 26, 1862.
After the Great War, he and his wife owned a mercantile store in Shelby, NC.
