However, in trying to sort all these (Thackers) out, this evening I also found a marriage record for S. W. Thacker ("our" Sam) and Lucy Ann Dawson (b 1820), who were married in Albemarle County on 8 Dec 1845. I cannot find any further record of either one of them, which means that he probably did die in 1846, and she remarried (thus her name changed to something else that is lost to history at this point). I can find no trace of either of these people in a census or other record after this, so I'm pretty convinced that the Shepherd tree (on Ancestry.com) is correct, even though it isn't sourced. The birth date jives with what you have for the cemetery, and the death date works with what I have found.
