Lillian was born at home to John Thomas and Nora (Dame) Higdon May 26, 1923, on a truck garden farm near Madisonville, Ky. She grew up during the Great Depression and made her choice to serve God at age 16.
Lillian worked for the Army in Lexington during World War II and married Tom McMaine, a Navy veteran, in 1947. They owned Culligan Water Conditioning in Paris, Ky., from 1948 to 1967. One of their greatest challenges and joys was helping Ginny Sue, who was handicapped after having encephalitis as a baby. Tom and Lil were cattle farmers from 1967 to 1982 near Hawesville, Ky. Lillian wrote "Spools and Spoons," a weekly homemaker's column for the Hawesville paper for 10 years. In 1982, they moved to Lexington.
Lillian, also known as "Lil" or "Mama Lil," enjoyed playing the piano, sewing, reading, trying new recipes, taking shorthand, playing Scrabble and using her computer. Most of all, she enjoyed being part of a Christian home fellowship and having company.
Lillian was able to live alone until about a month ago.
In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to charities such as Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY 40504.
