Iris Jo Huizenga, 55, of rural Platte, SD passed away Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Armour, SD of brain cancer.

Iris was born on April 22, 1954 in Stuttgart, Germany, where she grew up and attended school, graduating with a degree in Interior Decorating. On April 21, 1972, she was united in marriage to Roger Huizenga.

In 1977, Iris joined the US Air Force and served four years as an Aircrew Life Support Specialist. Thereafter, she held various other US government positions, including the National Security Agency. She was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans organization.

In 1998 she retired with her husband on a ranch in the rural Platte area, where she was active in her church and community. Iris was a member of the SD Outdoor Women’s program, Red Hatters club and Platte women’s bible study, “Coffee Break” group. She loved animals and enjoyed bird watching. Iris was also extremely talented in various handcrafts and home decoration.

Grateful for having shared in Iris’s life: her husband, Roger of Platte, SD; two children: son, Dale and wife Lynn of California and daughter, Michele of Rapid City, SD; and two grandchildren.

Iris was preceded in death by her parents.
