William is the son of George W Pierce and Martha "Patsy" Martin. He never married. His brother Anderson Pierce was the informant on his death certificate. His application for pension benifits states that he was born in Shelby, Alabama and arrived in Texas in 1867. He enlisted in early 1865 in Co H 17th Regiment of Louisiana as a private. He surrendered with his company near Mansfield Louisiana in spring of 1865 after Lees surrender at Appomattox. He applied for Veterans Benefits on May 22, 1916, providing affadavits for proof of his service by G P Pierce, his brother, David Bratton, J P Bevill, his brother-in-law, John E Gaskill of Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas; Wesly Kidd of Waxachie, Ellis, Texas and George W Short of Decatur, Wise, Texas. Gaskill, Kidd and Short testified by written oath that they knew W. H. Pierce and served with him in the same unit.
