OBITUARY :
RICCARDO (RICK) LEE ABOE of Martinsburg, passed from this life Sunday April 1st at 5:45 pm, with his wife and step children in attendance, after a valiant fight against a return of cancer.

He was born in Pisa, Italy Sept. 15, 1947 to Anna Marie Cabras Aboe and Kenneth Richard Aboe, who was stationed there by the US Army. Rick was the oldest of six children. He became a naturalized US citizen in 1953. He was an outstanding student, in spite of attending ten schools in twelve years because of his fathers Army career. While living in Hawaii he was on a swim team and held several state records. He attended the University of Virginia for two years before being drafted into the Army during the Viet Nam era. The seizing of the US merchant ship Pueblo, by North Korea caused his unit to be diverted to the DMZ in Korea, rather than Viet Nam. After separation from the military he worked as a golf course manager while attending the University of Maryland, from which he received an BS in Finance, with honors.

In 1980, after graduating Computer Learning Center he went to work in IT and for the remainder of his working life enjoyed his chosen field. For nearly 30 years he was commuting to Curtis Bay Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, first as a contractor, and since the early 2000's, as a Government employee. The CG "family" meant the world to him and he served them with enthusiasm and selflessness.

Golf was a major part of his life from the time he was 9 years old. For many years he was a member of the PGA and competed in events in Florida. Returning to amateur status, he competed in several mid- Atlantic and invitational tournaments. He and his partner Bill Butcher, were runners up in the 2007 WV Senior Four Ball and won in 2008. He enjoyed playing golf with his wife and step-daughter, as well, playing with Kelly in the 2011 WV Parent /Child event.

During the 1990's Rick and his wife Paulette, competed in many United Country Western Dance Council events across America winning an event in San Diego and placing 2nd in the 1998 World Championship in San Antonio, TX. An avid photographer, his favorite subjects were his five grandchildren and his family. He was a gourmet cook and even cooked for recreation. He loved all sorts of music especially, blues and country and had an extensive collection of CD's. He also had a large collection of mystery and civil war books.

He was pre-deceased by both his parents. He is survived by his wife of nearly 34 years, Paulette L. Aboe of Martinsburg, step-son Sean M. Mooney of Martinsburg, stepdaughter & husband, Kelly & John Wakelin and his five grandchildren, John D. Wakelin II, Victoria M. Wakelin, Isabel A. Wakelin, Alexander N. Wakelin, and Lucianna G. Wakelin, of Berkeley Springs, WV. Also, by his three brothers, Errol Aboe & wife Karen, of Charleston, SC, Robert Aboe & wife, Ronda, of Ft. Myers, FL, Jerry Aboe & wife Joanne, of Stafford, VA, and two sisters, Roxana White & husband, Ken, of Warrenton, VA, Romina Freeman and husband Roy, of Round Rock, TX, and many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
