Obituary: Carroll E.B. Peeke
Newsman, WWII Troop Leader

Carroll E.B. Peeke, a newspaperman and [U.S.] government official who led Brazilian troops during World War II's Italian campaign, died suddenly of a perforated ulcer, Saturday [June 15, 1991], at his retirement home, the Sequoias, in The City [San Francisco].

Mr. Peeke, who was 92, was universally known as "Col." Peeke in acknowledgement of the World War II rank he attained with the U.S. Army.

After graduating from UC-Berkeley in 1922, Mr. Peeke was a reporter and editor 10 years with the San Francisco Call-Bulletin. He was city editor and diplomatic editor of the Washington, D.C., Times Herald from 1932 until Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 7, 1941. He enlisted in the Army and was immediately named managing editor of the War Department's Bureau of Public Affairs.

Col. Peeke, as he soon became, led military missions to Ecuador and Brazil before leading an auxiliary contingent of troops from Brazil to join the U.S. 5th Army. He was decorated with the U.S. Army Commendation Medal and the Purple Heart, the Brazilian Order of Military Merit and War Cross, and the French Croix de Guerre.**

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary Ingraham Edie Watson Peeke, of The City's Sequoias retirement home. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
