Civil War Confederate Army Lieutenant General. A 1838 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he was a distinguished United States Army officer whom served in the Mexican conflicts and was a tactics instructor and commandant of cadets at West Point. At the start of the Civil War, he resigned his commission as Lieutenant Colonel, to serve in the Confederate Army of Tennessee. Appointed first as Colonel of CSA Cavalry, then Brigadier General of the Upper District of Arkansas and promoted Major General commanding the 1st Division, Central Army of Kentucky in December 1861. Known as "Old Reliable", he was promoted Lieutenant General in October 1862 and commanded the Armies of the Department of Mississippi, Tennessee and South Carolina, until he surrendered his corps on April 26, 1865. After the he became a planter in Alabama.
