In 1844 Elizabeth Sager traveled the Oregon Trail with her parents. During the journey, the 7 Sager children were orphaned, but were taken in by Dr. Marcus Whitman and his wife, at the Whitman Mission. She and her sisters were orphaned a second time, when the Dr. and Mrs. Whitman were killed in the Whitman Massacre in 1847. Elizebeth was 10 at the time. Her two older brothers were killed, and are buried at the Whitman Mission site. Elizabeth married in 1855 a William Helm, who was also an Oregon Trail Pioneer.
