Confederate Army Officer. A businessman in Abingdon, Virginia before the Civil War, he entered Confederate service as a Captain in the 50th Virginia Infantry Regiment in 1861. Wounded twice in 1861, he returned to service as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 63rd Virginia Infantry Regiment in 1862. Following a misunderstanding regarding the raising of an independent batallion which resulted in the arrest of the officers and men of his battalion, he resigned his commission. He served as a member of the Virginia Legislature during the war, returned to his business activities in Abingdon following the war, and was admitted late in life as an invalid to the Confederate Soldiers' Home in Richmond, where he died.
