Fred James Johnson was born February 6, 1905, in Spaulding, Indian Territory (Hughes County), son of Jesse James Johnson and Zania M. 'Zanie' Casey. On January 19, 1924, in Albany, Oklahoma (Bryan County, Fred married Velma Viola Chapman, who was born February 11, 1905 in Indian Territory (Oklahoma), daughter of Ben Chapman and Emma (maiden name unknown). Fred and Velma lived most of their lives in Bryan County, Oklahoma where he farmed.

Fred and Velma had nine children: Mary Fern, Claudia W., Norma Jean, Karen Jaynell, Ben James, Fred Wayne, Gerald Ray, Larry Chapman, and William Lee.

Fred has great wit, good looks, and a very generous personality. Even during lean years, he would extend a heartfelt invitation to any and all to share the bounty of his table, however meger. Fred loved his country and took an active part in politics. He was a staunch Democrat and worked for his part which he felt sure was the common man's salvation.

Velma was graced with much beauty both spiritually and physically. She was a quiet, patient worman who did not react as rapidly as Fred. Velma, like Fred, had little chance for formal education, but she did attend the Normal, as it was called in Durant for a time. All in all, both Velma and Fred were self-educated people who read all they could find and were loyal to radio and newspaper reporting.

Fred died October 14, 1955 in Hobbs, New Mexico (Lea County) and was buried in the Albany Cemetery in Albany, Oklahoma (Bryan County). Velma died February 12, 1968 in Albany, Oklahoma (Bryan County) and was buried in Highland Cemetery in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County). A double gravestone was erected on the gravesite in Highland with the intention of moving Fred from Albany so that he might rest throughout eternity beside his wife. Unfortunately, the attempted disinterment from Albany was determined to be too difficult and was abandoned. Fred is still interred in Albany Cemetery and the memorial 52456552 created for him in Highland serves as a cenotaph and explains the reason for Fred having two gravestones in two different cemeteries.
