Civil War Union Army Officer. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War first as a 1st Lieutenant in Company E, 19th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, a three-month enlistment regiment that served from May 18, 1861 to August 29, 1861. He then served in the 90th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, being commissioned Captain and commander of Company E on March 19, 1862. He led his men in the field until September 22, 1863, when he resigned. Soon after he enlisted in the Veterans Reserve Corps, serving as Captain and commander of Company B, 20th VRC until 1867.

"FIRST LIEUTENANT JOHN W. BARNES
Colonel Robert P. Dechert, of the Second Regiment Infantry, N. G. of Pa., has issued a general order announcing the death of the late adjutant of the regiment, First Lieutenant John W. Barnes, who at the time of his decease was the senior adjutant of the National Guard of Pennsylvania. I recognition of his faithful services, the regiment is ordered to assemble in State uniform, fully equipped (without knapsack, canteen or haversack), on Friday the 16th inst., at 3 o'clock P. M., to pay the last tribute respect to his memory. Lieut. Barnes joined the Infantry Corps National Guard, November 6, 1855; was commissioned first lieutenant of Company E., December 1, 1860, on the formation of the First Regiment; served in that position in the Nineteenth Pennsylvania Volunteers in the three months' service; was commissioned captain of Company E of the Nineteenth Pennsylvania Volunteers, September 3, 1861, and served with that regiment throughout its three years' service, and in the Veteran Reserve Corps of th United States army, until his honorable discharge, December 22, 1866. On April 15, 1869, he assumed the duties of adjutant of the regiment, remaining in commission until the hour of his death."
