Funeral services for Charles Edgar (C.E.) Payne, Jr., 85, of Greenville will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 16, 2012 at Boone Funeral Home, Leland. He died Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at his home after a lengthy illness. Burial will be in Leland-Stoneville Cemetery under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Leland.
He was born June 3, 1926 in Poinsett County, AR to Della Burgess Payne and Charles Edgar Payne, Sr. At the age of seventeen he entered the U.S. Navy during World War II serving in North Africa and Palermo, Sicily. Mr. Payne and his family moved to Leland in 1965 where he was engaged in farming until his retirement. He later owned and operated the "Lil Snack" Vending Company. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, metal detecting and gardening.
Mr. Payne is survived by his wife of 65 years, Velma Rorie Payne; a son, Mike Payne (Dianne); a daughter, Charlotte Hobbs (Eddie); a sister, Wylma Payne Parrish; 3 grandchildren, Tripp Hobbs (Robin), Rorie Scroggins (Chad) and Emily Payne; and 4 great grandchildren, Reagan Hobbs, Payne Hobbs, Max Scroggins and Evie Scroggins.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m., Friday, March 16, 2012 at Boone Funeral Home, Leland. Memorials may be made to Grace Community Hospice or to Parkview Baptist Church, Greenville.
