August 2014 Notes

I was looking for something in the estate papers of my Dad (Wilfred F Black) and came across a letter from Marjory Watts dated January 20, 1984.

It was written to my Dad's - Uncle James Caryl Black - the youngest son of Cornelius P. Black (Grandson of TO Roberts via Susanna Edmonds Black). The reason Marjory Watts would be writing Caryl Black is that Caryl's sister (Lela Mae Black Watts) was Marjory's Mother in Law.

In the letter, Marjory states that she has been doing research on TO Roberts. She indicated that she had found the spelling to be "Roberds" for his line. She went on to mention an article written by Kenneth Wilde (From Buncombe Heritage) on the Roberts family saying Thomas O Roberts was the son of John Roberts (Roberds)(born in 1750's) in Montgomery County VA. John was listed on the militia rolls from 1777 to 1790 in the Elk Creek District.

John Roberts / Roberds then came to Buncombe County and purchased land. Around 1818 he sold some of his land to William Rice.

She went on to cite Mr. Wilde that Thomas O Roberts was the 8th of 9 identified children of John Roberds; and that Thomas's Grandfather is believed to be Joseph Roberds (Roberts) whose will was dated May 27, 1778 in Henry County VA.

John Roberts' (father of Thomas) has a will dated January 16, 1845; the county and state not identified.

Marjory identified the siblings of Thomas O Roberts on a family group sheet as:
-Elizabeth b. 1768 VA, married February 18, 1786 to John Walling in Washington Co. TN
-John
-James
-William
-Jesse
-Susan Amarintha who married William Doane
-Sarah
-Thomas Osborn b. 8/4/1814 in Buncombe County NC, Died 1/16/1889 in same.
-Polly who married Charles Henderson Jr.

* A Roberts researcher (Jacqui Justice FAG Contributor (#46614391)) indicated to me in an email on August 28 2014 that "If you received information from Kenneth Wilde, you can pretty much 'take it to the bank.'

2013 NOTES
Thomas O Roberts married Cinthia (Cynthia / Synthia / Syntha) Fox; Daughter of William Fox Sr. and unknown mother.

Before he married Cynthia - he had some children - out of wedlock by Ann Edmonds - assumed daughter of William Edmonds Sr and sister to William Edmunds Jr (she and her children are on 2 census counts with William Edmunds Jr.. There were:

1. Susanna / Susannah Edmonds b. 1828 who married Montreville W Black and had 6 children. By family oral history, she has been identified as the illegitimate child of TO Roberts. BUT note- Thomas O Roberts would have only been 14 at the time of her birth if his birth date is correct. But supporting the oral history that he was Susanna's father - 2 of her children (Mary Black, i.e. Molly and Cornelius Pitzer Black lived with TO Roberts at one census count and are mentioned in or were a witness to his will.

2. Mary Jane (Polly) Edmonds Black b. 1832(per family oral history and her death certificate which lists Tommie Roberts as her Father - making TO age 18 at her birth). Polly also married Montreville W Black (after her sister's death) and had 2 children by him (1 before her sister's death and 1 after her sister's death.

In the January 1984 letter to Caryl Black, Marjory Watts said that family oral history was that after Mary Jane (Polly)Edmonds married Mont Black, she was mean to his children by Susanna and all the children by Susanna were sent off to live with other relatives.

Ann Edmonds seems to have had 5-6 children in total. Some sources say all her children were illegitimate but in the same 1/20/1984 letter to Caryl Black, Marjory Watts speculated that Ann Edmonds had been married to Cornelius Edmonds and that Ann's maiden name was "Fields" which is why one of her son's had "Fields" as a first name.

Ann Edmonds's (known) children were:
1. Caroline b. 1825

2. Susanna / Susannah b. 1828 - mentioned above - Daughter of TO Roberts

3. Fields b. 1830 - speculating - any possibility this is also child of TO Roberts?? He has been difficult to track via any formal records.

4. Mary Jane (Polly) Edmonds b. 1832 - mentioned above - Daughter of TO Roberts

5. Wesley Edmonds b. 1839. He has been difficult to track through formal records. A "Wesley Edmonds" is mentioned in "Clark's Chapel Church: A Heritage - The Church History from 1861-1977" by Mary Jo Eller Jones. Pages 8-9. In referring to the years 1907-1910 when Clarks Chapel Church was moved to its present location. "It is impossible to say who all helped with the work, but it is known that Wesley Edmonds did the finishing on the inside. Brother Edmonds was a faithful member and lay delegate that year." Page 9. It seems very likely that this is the son of Ann Edmonds as William Edmonds [Ann's brother] was a founding member of the church; and it is known that several close family members of Wesley Edmonds are buried in the church cemetery.

* More research is needed re: Ann Edmonds and if she was ever married to a Cornelius Edmonds. I have not run across any other source that ties Ann Edmonds to Cornelius Edmonds like the speculation put forth by Marjory Watts in the 1984 letter to Caryl Black.

Thomas O. Roberts had 7 children by Cinthia Fox Roberts including (and there may be others):

1. Elizabeth Elmira (aka Myra/Mirah) Ann Roberts b. 1834 married William J. Mitchell Garrison on 2/13/1851. Their children were
a. Synthia Wilson Catherine (aka Kate) Garrison; Name of Wilson comes from her Grandmother Melinda Wilson Garrison
b. Robert M. Franklin Garrison
c. James M.D. Garrison
d. Mary Elizabeth Garrison - my Great Grandmother married to Cornelius Pitzer Black
e. Absolem Jerome (aka Albert Jerry) Garrison
f. Jacob W. Garrison

2. Sarah Gemima Roberts b. 1836 to 1839 married to Newton Jasper Roberts (son of Joshua Judson Roberts) - they moved to Eastern TN after the Civil War (Specifically the Greeneville area)and Newton Jasper Roberts formed 2 Methodist Churches; Pine Grove and Mt. Hope. They had 8 children; 3 boys and 3 girls who lived to adulthood. One daughter was Lou Roberts Burkey and one son was named Zeb.

3. William Roberts b. 1839 / 1840 married Mary ?. Names of possible children are unknown.

4. Margaret J Roberts b 1837-1840 married 5/14/1857 to Thomas F Revis. ? Buried Laurel Fork Madison Co, NC. Had several children but their names are unknown.

5. Rebecca Christina Roberts b. 1844 married to Minor F. Clinton. They had 6 children.

6. James Wesley Roberts b. 1857 married to 1. M. Julina Bryant and 2. Cynthia Allman. All buried Refuge Cemetery. His children were:
a. Tom Newt Roberts
b. Herbert Roberts
c. Lewis Roberts
d. Schvil Roberts.

7. Mary Eliza Roberts b. 1842 married to William Henry Peek

Some web sites and family trees report these next 2 (#8, #9) as children of T.O. and Cinthia Roberts. But a granddaughter (Lou Roberts Burkey); daughter of Newton Jasper and Sarah Gemina did not list these 2 names in a letter she dictated detailing the siblings of her Mother.

8. Mary Erixia Roberts b. 1845 d. 10/21/1901 in either Jackson or DeKalb Co, AL; married 6/20/1867 in Buncombe County to John G Edmonds

9. Rachel Roberts b 1846
