Great grandson of Matthias Barnhardt, who immigrated from the Upper Palatinate of the Rhine Germany. Matthias arrived in Philadelphia on August 15, 1750 aboard the ship Royal Union. Lorenzo was the son of Benjamin Barnhart and Selma A. (Celina) Barnhart (nee Betzer). Lorenzo enlisted as a Private in Company B of the 110th Ohio Infantry Regiment on 03 September 1862. He mustered out with the Company on 25 June 1865 in Washington, DC. His cousin Harvey Harry Barnhart (b 1841) was also a member of Company B of the 110th OVI. Harvey passed away on April 30th, 1864 at Brandy Station/Culpepper, Virginia. Lorenzo married Sarah Jane Brown on October 29th, 1865 in Ross County, Ohio. Member of GAR Jobes Post 157.
