James stated on his records he was born in McHenry Co., IL.
James first served in Co G 12th Iowa Infantry, enlisting at Decorah, IA on Sept. 30, 1861.
He and several other comrades did not get along with a new commander. The commander decided to have James and the others discharged due to illnesses.

He then served during the Civil War with Capt. John S. Pratt (Co I 147th IL Inf)
