MCALDUFF, HAROLD JAMES (HAL), JR. - 94, died at his home on Thursday, February 24th. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on February 1, 1918, he had been a resident of Oak Ridge since 1947, retiring from DOE in the early 1980's.

After two and a half years at Harvard University, he answered his country's call during WWII, joining the U.S. Army Air Corps and serving as a Navigator on B-17 aircraft attaining the rank of Major. He flew 26 combat missions with the 97th Bomb Group over Europe, including air campaigns over Greece, Italy, France, and Germany and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters for his heroic service. After his combat tour, he was assigned to the U.S. Strategic Air Forces in Europe, often as a member of General Carl Spaatz's personal air crew flying classified missions throughout Europe. Hal survived a plane crash in December 1944 and carried an unconscious airman to safety as the aircraft burst into flames. He walked away unscathed, continued to serve and witnessed the signing of Germany's unconditional surrender in Reims, France on May 7, 1945.

It was during his military service that Hal met his future wife, Jane Tisdale, at a USO dance in Nashville, Tennessee. They were happily married for almost 65 years when Jane passed away in 2009. He would often acknowledge that there were two "WOWS" in his life - seeing Boston from 30,000 feet and Jane for the first time.

In 1956, Hal answered the call once again when he became a member of the Clinton Home Guard that maintained peace and order during the Clinton, Tennessee Desegregation Crisis prior to the arrival of assistance from the State of Tennessee. An Industrial Hygienist, Hal held several positions with AEC and DOE and was proud to call Oak Ridge his home. Hal and Jane raised their three daughters, the "apples of their eyes" here and enjoyed golf, swimming, traveling, and spending time with each other and their family.

Hal and Jane were lifelong members of the First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold J. and Eileen J. McAlduff, Sr., his brothers, David W., Frederick D,, and William H. McAlduff, and a grandson, David Edward Jones. He is missed by three daughters and their husbands, Janice Cole and husband Phil, Marcia McLendon and husband Bill, and Sharon Vance and husband Mark; grandsons James Steven Jones and wife Jamie, and Matthew Vance; granddaughters Kerry Vance and Caroline Vance; great grandchildren, Katie, Steven, and Benjamin Jones; and numerous adored nieces and nephews. The family would like to say a special thank you to Diane, Randi, and Stacey, who were very special friends and caregivers to Hal in his final days.

The family also requests that memorials be in the form of donations to Alzheimer's TN, "We Back Pat." The funeral service will be held on Monday, February 27, 7:00 PM at First United Methodist Church, Oak Ridge, with Rev. Troy Forrester officiating. The military graveside service will be Tuesday, 10:00 AM at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:00 till 7:00 PM, Monday at the church.
