SHREVEPORT, LA - Services for MSG Retired Albert J. "Al" Pumilio will be held Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in Rose-Neath Marshall Street Chapel. Interment will follow at NW LA Veterans Cemetery in Keithville, LA with full military honors. Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 28, 2012, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Al was born July 23, 1937 in Brooklyn, NY to Joseph Pumilio and Virginia Capua Pumilio. He passed away on February 25, 2012 at Overton Brooks VA Medical Center in Shreveport, LA.

He began his military career when entered the Army in 1953. While participating in Operation Sage Brush in Shreveport, LA in October 1955, he met his future Linda Dupree at the Louisiana State Fair where they married in Marshall, TX March 6, 1956.

Al and Linda moved many times before returning to Shreveport in 1968. During his military career, Al served as an Army recruiter and career counselor. Al served two tours in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star. During the early 1970's, he was a panelist on the TV show, "Youth Wants To Know", answering questions and providing information on careers in the US Army. Upon retirement in 1978, Al went to work for the Shreveport Police Department as city jailer and later served as ROTC instructor at Southwood High School. In 1989, he became a service officer for Bossier Parish Veterans Affairs where he served until his retirement in 2006. Al was passionate about the Army, service men and women and veterans. He went to battle many times to ensure that all veterans were awarded there just, fair and legal compensation.

Al was a lifetime member of VFW Post 5951 where he served two terms as Post Commander, a lifetime member of American Legion Post 14, Forty and Eight Voiture 137 and DAV. He was Catholic and attended St. Theresa's, St. John's and St. Pius X. In 2006, Al moved to East Texas where he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In February 2012, Al moved into the War Veterans Home in Bossier City, LA.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Rosemarie Nocella.

Al is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda of Brownsboro, TX; four children, Rosemary Parmley of Brownsboro, TX, Steve Pumilio and wife, Lynne of Pine Mountain Club, CA; Joey and wife, Shannon of Littleton, CO; John Pumilio of Shreveport, LA; eleven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; brother, Nicky Pumilio of Seaford, NY; sisters-in-law, Janie Madden and husband, James Magnolia, AR; Carolyn Forrest and husband, Jack of Murfreesboro, TN; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.

Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons, Chris Sanders, Blayne Sanders, Blake Baldridge and Daniel Wright, all of Brownsboro, TX; SPC Michael Pumilio of Fairbanks, AK; cousin, Glen Emerson of Vivian, LA; nephews, Randy Forrest of Murfreesboro, TN, and Randy Madden and Mike Madden of Magnolia, AR.

Special thanks to Dr. Ferraro, Dr. Shearer and Dr. Hensley all of Overton Brooks VA Medical Center; as well as, all the doctors, nurses and staff of ISU/SDU and comfort care for their compassion, courtesy and professionalism during this difficult time.
