He enlisted in the U.S. Army on 13 February 1956. He served his country valiantly, doing two tours in Vietnam during the height of the Vietnam War. Even though Duane was often far from home, he stayed close to his family. He was stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas at the time of his father's death in 1961.
He was injured at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, when a boiler exploded burning his hands. He was married briefly in the early 1970's.
Duane was on his way home from Germany in the spring of 1974, when he suffered a brain aneurysm. This left him permanently disabled and he was released from the Army on 29 April 1974. After he was released from the hospital, he lived with his brother Ben and his family. They cared for him for a few years, before he moved into the V.A. Hospital in Palo Alto, California.
