Robert Samuel Deatherage was born in Stokes Co., NC to parents William and Sarah Hill Deatherage. Some time after the birth of the last child in this family, they left North Carolina and settled in Poplar Creek, Knox Co. KY and possibly Larue County where Robert's sister Elizabeth first married a George Younce in 1865. The family settled next in Jersey County IL where Robert's sister Elizabeth married second husband Nelson Stoner in 1869. Robert and his family can be found on the 1870 Jersey Co. IL census.

Between 1870 and 1872, Robert's sister Elizabeth Stoner and family settled Wayland, Chariton Co., MO, less than 10 miles from where Robert's future wife and her family settled around the same time. And Robert's family settled 2 counties over, in Johnson Co. MO by the 1880 census.
