Sara Lorraine Elaine (Gregg) Addis, 89, of Vanderbilt, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, at home surrounded by her family. "When you realize your time is limited, you don't get offended every time you turn around. You let it go and trust God to make your wrongs right." Born July 24, 1925, in Connellsville, she spent her childhood on Springfield Pike attending Rock Ridge School and Connellsville High School located on Fairview Avenue. The high school was a mile and a half from her home and she delighted in telling anyone who would listen (as recently as last month) that she walked those three miles every day. After graduation with the class of 1942, she worked a variety of jobs including American Store, Streamline Market, G.C. Murphy (counter girl), Troutman's and later Boni's Motel and Nelson Bus LIne. While at G.C. Murphy's, she met the love of her life, "Turp" Addis. They married in 1945 and she began her lifelong career as mother and homemaker. Long summer days at Flatwoods Pool, wonderful holiday seasons and an endless array of cookies are just some of the delicious memories made during those days. Sara was a lifelong member of United Methodist Church in Vanderbilt and a member of the Aunt Dorothy Class. She served as a church missionary and was a Bible school teacher. In addition, she was a former member of the DLV Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. She also was a chaperone for the youth dances at the Vanderbilt Moose and volunteered time to the Girl and Cub Scout troops in Vanderbilt. Sara was the first born daughter of Stella Wilma Kooser Gregg and Thomas Edmund Gregg, of Springfield Pike, Connellsville. Her siblings included Mildred Marion Ritenour, Shirley Bonita Bankes, Thomas Alan Gregg, Nancy Arlene Weltz and Dierdre Jane Fisher, of which three survive. She is survived by her six children, Daniel B. Addis, Denise L. (Cameron) Bonadio, Dawna L. Addis Colbert, Dale G. Addis, Darlene L. (Mike) Hayes and John W. (Kelly) Addis III; and three she considered her children, Thaddeus J. Golonka, Joseph M. Pindro and Ruth Ann Thomas. Surviving are 14 grandchildren, Joseph C. (Stacey) Bonadio, Eric J. Bonadio, Richard B. Colbert III, Jason W. Colbert, Clifford W. Colbert, Gregory A. (Samantha) Colbert, Shawn M. (Jenny) Hayes, Justin W. (Katie) Hayes, John W. Addis IV, Joshua B. Addis, Jenna B. Addis, Zane W. Addis, Jason M. Stolitca and Trevor J. Farrell; nine great-grandchildren, Brock, Brody, Brant and Cameron Bonadio, Carter, Emily, Alexa, Brecken, Payton and Jaslyn Colbert; and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family and friends. In addition to her parents, Sara was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, John W. Addis Jr.; two sisters, M. Marion Ritenour and Dierdre J. Fisher; along with two sisters-in-law, Gerri Addis and Gladys Addis. Turp Addis had a favorite song that reminded him of Sara, "I met my million dollar baby at the five and dime." The singer or author of that song has long been lost, but the meaning is as firm as the day it was produced. Sara was most definitely a "Million Dollar Baby" and a life well lived will remain her legacy to her family and to anyone who knew her; her beauty, her wit, her ability to adapt to new situations; her willingness to make sure her children had what they needed and ensure wonderful memories for situations just like this and for years to come; Memories like an open dinner time that welcomed anyone a place at the table, homemade Halloween costumes; Memorial Day in Vanderbilt, laying in the sun and floating in her pool; the 1965 Plymouth station wagon covered with flower power stickers. We think back to a time when an endless stream of friends from all over the East Coast made their way to Vanderbilt amazed at what they found, a welcoming woman who never questioned a thing: a woman who never judged what she saw on the outside, even when she didn't understand. What mattered was inside. When her husband died, Sara wrote in her journal - "Thank you for loving me." We say to Sara, "Thank you for loving us." Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 2015, at Vanderbilt United Methodist Church, Route 201, Vanderbilt, where the service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb., 24, 2015. Interment will be in Dickerson Run Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vanderbilt United Methodist Church, Vanderbilt.
