Grace Matson Backman
1905~2006
Grace Matson Backman passed away January 29, 2006 at Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem.
Grace was born November 27, 1905 in Diamond Fork, UT. She attended Provo High School. In 1946, she married Everett Backman. She was preceded in death by Everett and her daughter, Dorothy Cobbley. She is survived by her daughters, Helen McDowell and Margaret Lofstrom, and her 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 28 great-great-grandchildren.
Loved by her large family and many friends, Grace was known in her Provo neighborhood as the "Cookie Lady" because she would give cookies to all the neighborhood children. At her 100th birthday party last November, one neighborhood resident pointed out that Grace had given cookies to three generations of his family.
Grace undoubtedly held many records for volunteer service with the "Pink Ladies". She was twice "Volunteer of the Year" for the state of Utah, and once "Woman of the Year" for Provo. Grace will be missed greatly.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 2, 2006, 11:00 a.m. at, St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 464 West 3700 North, Provo. A viewing will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2006, from 6-8 p.m. at Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center St., Provo and Thursday from 10-11 a.m. at the church.
