Actress. Born in London, England to Canadian parents, she came to Canada with her family at ten months of age. She received her education at Toronto's Havergal College, then she went on to study acting at the Royal Conservatory of Music. Her long and prolific career in film, television and stage spanned nearly four decades in both the United States and Canada. The films to her credit include The Andromeda Strain, Sweet Hearts Dance, A Delicate Balance, The Best Damn Fiddler from Calabogie to Kalabar and This Property Is Condemned. Her television credits included playing Aunt Lil on Dallas, plus episodes of Columbo, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, and numerous other television series. Her most notable roles on live stage include Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Katharina in The Taming of the Shrew. In 1974 she was honoured by membership as an Officer of the Order of Canada. Other honors include ACTRA and Dora Mavor Moore Awards in 1980 and 1981, the Earle Grey Award in 1988, and honorary degrees from York University in 1970 and the University of Toronto in 1989. Her most famous quote, "Acting is not being emotional, but being able to express emotion." In 1993, at age 62, she succumbed to a brain tumor in her hometown of Stratford, Ontario.
