Chester Clarence "Chet" Skirvin, 85, Bloomington, died September 9th.

He was born in Bloomington July 6, 1926 to the late Raymond Skirvin and Lillian Dobbs Skirvin.

Chet graduated from Bloomington High School. He served in the United States Air Force as a pilot 1st Lieutenant and was stationed in Germany, England and Kodiak Island, Alaska. He completed college course work at Indiana University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Rochester Institute of Technology.

He was preceded in death by his life-long love and wife of 59 years, Audrey Skirvin; and by daughter-in-law Barb Skirvin.

He is survived by his nine children, Paul Skirvin, Chet (Katie) Skirvin, Marc Skirvin, Dave (Ann) Skirvin, Sandy (Loyd) Kilbury, Nancy (Brad) Williams, Sue (Brian) Brase, Bob Skirvin, Tom (Kathie) Skirvin; 21 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Chet was the consummate family man and father, a serious man who dedicated his life to raising and providing for his wife and nine children. He was a hero and role model to his sons and daughters.

A meticulous tool and die craftsman, Chet made his career at Heintz and Phillippsen Tool and Die in Rochester, New York. He returned to Bloomington with most of his family in 1976 and was employed by the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration, retiring in 1992.

Chet loved to garden and was an avid outdoorsman. He was a dedicated attendee of the Bloomington Farmer's Market and rarely missed a summer Saturday there. He was a friendly patron at many of Bloomington's shops and stores.

During the last months of Chet's life he was lovingly cared for by the nurses and staff at Bell Trace and the Bloomington Hospital. The dedication and love rendered in his care will never be forgotten and the Skirvin family will be forever grateful.
