Obituary
Black Mountain - Wilhelmina Burnette Kerlee Headley passed away Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at the age of 79.

Willie was the first baby born in Buncombe County January 1, 1932, the daughter of Howard "Doss" and Wilhelmina Kerlee. She was predeceased by her parents and older sister, Elsie Naché.

Willie is survived by her husband of 56 years, Robert "Bob" Headley; son, Robert and wife, Donna of Lynchburg, VA; daughter, Terry of Mt. Pleasant, SC; son, Kenny of New York City; and Bethie and husband, Fred of Isle of Palms, SC. Also, Willie's eight dearly loved grandchildren, Justin, Braelyn, Ryan, Allie, Brad, CoreyAnna, Maddie and Branch as well as her niece, Bonnie Naché who is like a daughter. In addition, there are numerous nieces and nephews that Willie adores.

Willie attended Montreat High School and graduated from Black Mountain High School. She attended Meredith College and graduated from Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte as an RN and Winston-Salem State University with a BSN.

Willie's grandparents lived in the North Fork area now covered by the Burnette Reservoir. At age five, Willie's family moved to her current residence on North Fork Road-"Over Yonder". Her father, "Doss" was the long-serving Black Mountain postmaster and held a number of other positions in town. Willie grew up with an assortment of animals including; dogs, cats, horses, sheep, chickens, and pigs. Among her favorites were "Moosie" the cow and "Sport" her horse, who she regularly rode around the Burnette Reservoir after school.

Before moving back to Black Mountain from Winston-Salem where she raised her four children, Willie was active in Girl Scouts as a leader and took the girls on memorable trips throughout the country and Europe. For her selfless contributions to the Girl Scouts and her girls, she received the highest volunteer Girl Scout Award.

After retirement, Willie and Bob moved back to her beloved mountains and her childhood home, "Over Yonder". For seven years, Willie ran "Bed and Breakfast Over Yonder" in her home on North Fork after her father, Doss died but, closed it to enjoy their retirement. In Black Mountain, Willie became very active in the Black Mountain Beautification Committee, the Black Mountain Community Foundation, Swannanoa Valley Museum, Black Mountain Presbyterian Church, the Women's Prison Greenhouse and Chaplaincy and Transitional Housing programs. As a Master Gardener, she was passionate about flower arranging and gardening and was instrumental in maintaining many of Black Mountain's public gardens, hanging baskets and flower boxes. When Willie's green car appeared on their street, the merchants and residents of Black Mountain all knew that their street would soon be bristling with beautiful flowers. During her latter days, she continued making notes about how the downtown plots and hayracks should be planted. She also was composing sketches of the Town Square property which was so important to her. Then finally, she began planning Christmas decorations for her church which had been her responsibility for years. Her love of and dedication to her hometown was immeasurable and unconditional.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions would be appreciated to either the Town of Black Mountain Beautification Committee or the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church (flower fund).

A private burial service will be conducted at the Mountain View Cemetery. At Willie's request, the family will participate in a Moravian Love Feast to say "Thank You and Good-bye" to our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 3:30 pm. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.

The family would like to warmly thank Lisa Kirk RN of Hospice CarePartners for her most capable and warm-hearted support.
