Rabbi Katzenstein's decision to leave his ministry at Temple Israel in 1967 came as a surprise to his many friends in the congregation. A keen loss was felt especially among those members who had come to know him personally and had felt his warm interest in their individual problems. These close personal congregational relations did not prevent him from taking an active part in local Jewish and non-Jewish affairs. During his six years in St. Louis, he served as campaign chairman of the Jewish Federation one year, and was for some time a director of the Rosalie Tilles Nonsectarian Charity Fund. He was a member of The Missouri Association for Social Welfare and served on the Boards of the Freedom of Residence group here and the St. Louis Council of the Experiment in International Living. He was an alumni overseer of the Hebrew Union College---Jewish Institute of Religion and a member of the Advisory Council of the Harvard Divinity School Alumni Association.
Rabbi Martin Edgar Katzenstein was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 12, 1922. He received his undergraduate training at the University of Cincinnati, graduating in 1945. He interrupted his program at Hebrew Union College for a year of study at the University of Zurich in 1947. He returned to the Hebrew Union College and in 1950 received the degree of Master of Hebrew Letters.
Before coming to Temple Israel, he served as assistant rabbi at Congregation Rodeph Shalom in Philadelphia for five years and as rabbi at Temple Emanu-El in Marblehead, Massachusetts, until 1961 when he was called to be associate rabbi at Temple Israel, St. Louis, Missouri. He became senior rabbi in 1963.
In June, 1967, following his resignation as rabbi at Temple Israel, he returned to the New England Area and to the summer home his family had in New Hampshire. He resumed his graduate work at Harvard University and was appointed acting Dean of Students at the Divinity School. Because of his success in teaching Hebrew to slow students, he was given the Harvardian Title of Preceptor in Hebrew. He died at his summer home in Sunapee, New Hampshire, on September 4, 1970 at the age of forty seven. A colleague of his wrote: "Martin Katzenstein had an extraordinary capacity to sense and discover need and to be present in time of crisis. Most of us knew him best as minister and friend...In case of need, his gift of himself was so complete that the recipient could not conceive of his having done the same for others."

Rabbi Marten E. Katzenstein, former Rabbi of Temple Israel, Creve Coeur, Missouri, died Saturday, September 5th at his summer home in Sunapee, NH of a heart attack. He was 47 years old.
Rabbi Katzenstein came to Temple Israel as Associate Rabbi in 1961. In 1963 he became senior Rabbi of the Temple, when Rabbi Ferdinand M. Isserman retired to become Rabbi Emeritus. He was General Chairman of the Jewish Federation of St. Louis Campaign of 1966.
He left Temple Israel in June 1967 to return to Harvard University to study for a Doctor of Theology degree and to teach. Rabbi Katzenstein would have become dean of students at the Harvard Divinity School this fall.
Surviving are his wife, Jacqueline; a son David; and two daughters, Ellen and Emily. Funeral services were held Monday at Temple Emanu-El in Marblehead, Massachusetts where he was Rabbi before coming to St. Louis
