HICKS, JR., ORTON HAVERGAL - died peacefully at home, February 6, 2004 surrounded by his family. Born in Fifth Avenue Hospital, New York City, NOV 4, 1926; raised in Great Neck, Long Island. Parents were Orton Havergal Hicks and Lois (Paddock) Hicks. Survived by: wife, Georgia Williamson Hicks; children: Victoria Rist Hicks, Daniel Orton Hicks, Orton Havergal Hicks III and Robert Thorton Hicks; stepchildren: Janine W. Kanzler and James J. Williamson; grandchildren; sister Lois Paddock Hicks Coerper; former wife, Janet Fox Hicks. Predeceased by sister, Caryl Hicks Clark. Served U.S. Army (invasion of Japan). Pianist and arranger for 349th Army Service Force Band. In 1946 he was invited to report to "the" Army Band as an arranger, but at the same time he was accepted to Dartmouth College where he enrolled and later earned three degrees: a BA, an MBA from Tuck Business School and an MA in Political Geography. He was Phi Beta Kappa, a Rufus Choate Scholar, and president of the Glee Club. Orton was a founder of the Dartmouth Aires, a close harmony singing group. He attended several universities including the University of Copenhagen and the Sorbonne in Paris.Orton was known for his gracious spirit, his energy and humor, and his story telling and poetry recitals. He enriched the lives of everyone who knew him and carried his many accomplishments with an unfeigned modesty. Burial at the Woodstock River Street Cemetery.
