He enlisted in Company G, 8th Iowa Cavalry, on 8 Aug 1863 from his residence in Fairview, Jones County, IA. He was taken prisoner on 6 Apr 1865 at Sipsey River, Walker County, AL, later paroled and discharged on 13 Aug 1865 at Macon, Bibb County, GA.
On 22 Oct 1874 he married Harriet L. Heald Caffee (14 Oct 1855-16 Oct 1914).
They had seven children; Ora Harold Caffee (-), Orris John Caffee (25 Nov 1872-19 Nov 1945), Hallie Claudian Caffee (30 May 1875-), Enola May Caffee Wade (30 Jun 1877-10 Nov 1938), Florence Hattie Caffee (22 Jul 1887-), Thomas Franklin Caffee (29 Oct 1888-30 Jul 1958), and Wayne Leland Caffee (18 Nov 1897-1982).
On 27 Jul 1886 he was given an invalid pension (#581130), certificate #1070710. In 1893 the family was living in Ponca, Dixon County, NE. He died on 10 Mar 1910 and they are both buried in the Graceland Cemetery. On 21 Mar 1910 his widow Harriet Caffee was given a pension (#938322), certificate #701498.
