Betty J. Patton, age 85, of Mangum, passed away early Friday morning, January 27, 2012, at her home, in Mangum.

Mrs. Patton was born on December 10, 1926, in Pharr, Texas to William Alvin and Blanche (Reeves) Craven. Betty's family moved to Mangum her senior year where she graduated from Mangum High School in 1944. Her family moved to California shortly after her graduation. She married R.L. Patton of Mangum on June 6, 1944, in Tulare, California. Shortly thereafter, R.L. left for Naval training in Farragut, Idaho while Betty stayed in Mangum with family. After basic training, Betty joined R.L. in San Diego, California and then Seattle, Washington before returning to Greer County, in 1946, where R.L. began a lifetime of farming. In the late sixties, Betty attended Altus Junior College and later transferred to Southwestern University where she completed her Bachelor's degree in 1971 and Master's degree in 1972. During her 29 year teaching career, Betty taught English at Altus and Mangum High Schools, before taking a position at Western Oklahoma State College where she spent twenty-six years teaching English and Spanish before retiring at age seventy. With R.L. being the tag agent, Betty found her way into the business and spent the next ten years working at the Mangum Tag Office. Betty was a member of the First Baptist church where she was the church treasurer for many years.

Preceded in death by her parents and one brother Jim Craven, she is survived by her husband, R.L. Patton, of the home; two children, Ronnie Patton and wife Theresa of Colleyville, Texas and Sharon Callen and husband Jim of Chickasha; six grandchildren, Michael Patton and wife Amy, Stephanie Buya and husband Ryan, John Foley and wife Melinda, Nathan Foley, Laura Breshears and husband Scott and Steven Callen and wife Erin; eleven great grandchildren; one brother Bob Craven and wife June of Carpentersville, Illinois along with other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Betty Patton will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at the Mangum First Baptist Church with Pastor Shawn Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
