During the Civil War, John Valentine McGriff served in Company B, 110th Ohio Volunteers Infantry. He enrolled Aug 9, 1862 in Arcanum, Ohio. His name appears on the Muster-In Roll at Camp Piqua, Ohio Oct 2, 1862.

On Nov.27, 1863, in the Battle of Mine Run at Locust Grove, John was killed by a ball from a musket or rifle and died that same day at Brandy Station, Va. He was survived by a young wife and a 22 month old son.
