Barbara Elizabeth Stickney, 80, of Walden died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at her residence.

She was born Dec. 20, 1924, in Haverhill, Mass., the daughter of Norman and Florence (Smithers) Brown.

She graduated from West Newbury, Mass., High School in 1943. In 1945 in Bronx, N.Y., she entered the U.S. Navy. She was a pharmacist's mate second class stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, N.H. She received an American Campaign Ribbon and a World War II Victory Medal for her efforts. She was honorably discharged in 1947.

She was first married to Charles J. Grimsley, who died in 1961. On Sept. 11, 1964, she married William Stickney. He died in 1991.

During her nursing career she worked at a nursing home and the Bethesda Naval Hospital, both in Bethesda, Md. She later worked as a custodian for the Hampton National Bank in New Hampshire. She retired in 1986, and then moved to Walden, where she has since lived.

Mrs. Stickney was affiliated with the East Hardwick Congregational Church. She was a member of the Tide Mill #67 Order of the Eastern Star and the American Legion Post #35, both in Hampton, N.H.

She enjoyed crocheting, eating out with friends and collecting Teddy bears.

She was predeceased by a brother, Norman L. Brown Jr.

Spring burial will be in the High Street Cemetery in Hampton, N.H.
