ROBERT E. AGSTEN

Robert E. Agsten, 85, of Charleston died at home at Edgewood Summit on Jan. 18, 2005, after a long illness.

Born Aug. 1, 1919, in Williamson, Mr. Agsten was the son of Robert E. and Lucille Wilson Agsten and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Agsten Sr., who raised him after the deaths of his parents.

A lifelong resident of Charleston who resided at 1405 Loudon Heights Road for 38 years, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering in 1943 from the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, and was in ROTC.

He served in combat as a captain in the U.S. Army Infantry in Germany during World War II and was awarded the combat infantry badge. He served overseas during the Korean War as well.

He was a licensed professional engineer and owner and president of Robert E. Agsten Inc. General Contractors and Engineers. He build numerous buildings in the area during his life, including the headquarters for McJunkin Corporation and Walker Machinery, and well as additions and renovations for Charleston Area Medical Center and Rite Aid Corporation. His last major project was the Spillman, Thomas & Battle Building on Kanawha Boulevard East.

He served as president of the West Virginia Contractors Association, Kanawha Valley Chapter, and was president of numerous PTAs for his children's schools.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Rotary Club and Edgewood Country Club.

Mr. Agsten is survived by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Barbara Jean Pierson Agsten; daughters, Deborah of Louisville, Ky., and Melinda of New Haven, Conn.; son, Robert of Delray Beach, Fla.; granddaughter, Caroline; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at First Presbyterian Church Chapel with the Rev. Robert Newman and the Rev. Richard Neely officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.
