INDIANAPOLIS — Norris Maxine Hayes, age 83, of Indianapolis, formerly of Bloomington, died Sunday, Sept. 4, in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born July 9, 1928, in Morgan County, Indiana, she was the daughter of Arley and Reecie (Routier) Whitaker. She had formerly worked for Sarkes Tarzian and retired from R.C.A., where she was a storekeeper. She loved birdwatching, gardening and walking in the woods and working word puzzles. She also was active with the neighborhood children, serving as a mentor and helping them to learn to read. When living in Bloomington, she was active with the Bloomington Parks and Rec. Dept., helping at the Frank Southern Ice Arena and with Halloween activities.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Hayes (Curtis Johnson), of Bloomington; one son, Thomas Allen Hayes (Lisa), of Indianapolis, three sisters, Bonnie Whitaker, of Spencer, Rosia Walls, of Martinsville and Doris Whitaker, of Ellettsville; one brother, Alvin Whitaker, of Spencer; five grandchildren, Lisa Hayes, Helen Hayes, Dylan Evans, Kelsey Evans and Austin Evans; and five great-grandchildren, Shawn, Brandon, Reese, Tuff and Bradley. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Robert Hayes, on March 21, 1991, and one son, John Dennis Hayes, in 1971.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Valhalla Memory Gardens with Rev. Alan Phillips officiating. Burial will follow the service. There is no visiting prior to the service.
The family suggests memorial contributions be given to any literacy program or to the Sycamore Land Trust.
