March 2016 - From Barbara Best Smith (Daughter of Merla Watts Best;Granddaughter of Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Guthrie Watts)

I have traced our Guthrie lineage back to 6th great-grandfather John (John I), who came over from Scotland in 1684. He wound up in Middlesex County, Virginia, where he married Eliza Basket, 1687.

John I and Eliza had a son John II, 1689 [married to Mary Guthrie],
who had a son William C Guthrie, 1722-1798,
who had a son John III, 1757-abt 1822 [Married to Ann ?; was not Betty Ann Guthrie married to John Guthrey in Va],

who had a son Jonathan Guthrie 1781 [married to Jemima Arrington],

who had a son, William Henry Guthrie 1827-1904 [Married to Rebecca Jane Revis],
who had a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Guthrie Watts 1869-1951!!

Now, I have a breakdown in the chain when it comes to William and his son John III. I used the family history you sent me in the Madison County NC Heritage as a starting point for William and John III.

The history in this publication gives conflicting accounts of John III's heritage. The first paragraph of John's story has him being born in 1757 in Madison County, KY, to William and Eleanor Abbott. The next paragraph has him born in Hanover County Va. in 1766 (probably a typo). Names of parents not noted.

My lineage research, and it seems pretty accurate, has William born in 1722 Middlesex County, Virginia, to John II and Mary Guthrie. While living in Middlesex county, William married a woman named Mary (not Eleanor Abbott as shown in the Heritage article) and they had a son named John III.

William died in 1734. His son, John III, would have been 10 years of age at the time of William's death. That would jibe with the Heritage account that he left Hanover (Middlesex) County, at the age of 10 and moved to Halifax County, NC. I base this on the fact that Middlesex and Hanover Counties are quite near each other and movement around that area probably would not have been uncommon. Often, in those days when a parent died, families were often split up and children sent off to other relatives to relieve some of the burden on the surviving spouse, which could have been the reason John went to Halifax Co. John III later found his way to Cumberland County, Virginia, where he married Betty Ann Allen.

My problem is with William's marriage to Eleanor Abbott. The family account in John III's story, has William marrying a Eleanor Abbott from Kentucky. I can find no evidence that William was ever in Kentucky and very little information at all on a Eleanor Abbott Guthrie. What little there is does not indicate that she ever left Madison County, KY. Also, there is evidence that she owned slaves and I find no connection with slavery in our branch. End of Notes from Barbara Smith - still under investigation

Obviously some deeper research is needed about William marriage to Mary vs Eleanor Abbott
