Mars Hill - Winna Lee Stines, 88, of Mars Hill, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2012.

Winna was born May 9, 1923 in Madison County where she lived all of her life in the beautiful mountains. She loved traveling and had been in all forty-eight states; however, her happiest moments were when she returned home to her panoramic view of Mars Hill and Bailey Mountain.

"Winnie" was the fourth of six children born to the late Fuller H. and Bessie Fox Stines. She and her five siblings lived in the Bull Creek area of Madison County during the "Great Depression". One of the joys she shared with her sisters was building a playhouse out of pretty rocks, moss and wild flowers. They carried their lunch to school in a four pound lard bucket and walked two miles to Bull Creek School. After graduating from Mars Hill High School in 1942, she worked at the ASC office in Marshall for several years. In 1953 she became a secretary for the Woodson W. Ray Insurance Company and later became a partner in the company. She loved her work and the customers she served. Winna had a very kind and generous spirit that only those people who received her help knew about. In 2005, she received the "FRIENDS OF CHILDREN" yearly award from The Baptist Children's Home of North Carolina.
Winna was preceded in death by her parents, Fuller H. and Bessie Fox Stines; sister, Mildred; two special nieces, Ann Stines and Billie Lynn Roberts.
Surviving are her sisters, Eloise McIntosh (Wintz) of Burnsville, Elizabeth Roberts of Marshall and Jean Stines of Arden; brother, Fred Stines of Morganton; nieces, Pat Franklin of Marshall, Susan Ball (Niles) of Burnsville and Karen Rocket (David) of Morganton; nephews, McRae Roberts of Marshall and Harrell Stines (Connie) of Morganton; several great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Madison Funeral Home, Marshall, NC with the Reverends Buddy Freeman and Eddie Fox officiating. Burial will follow in the Tillery Cemetery.
