Otis E. Abernethy Jr., 81, of Charleston died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, following a short illness.

Born May 8, 1923, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Otis E. Sr. and Dessie Stansbury Abernethy.

Mr. Abernethy was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. In addition, he was a master electrician, retiring from E.I. DuPont Belle facility and Penn Electric Company.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Miriam "Mim" Mason Abernethy; sons and their wives, Michael Abernethy and his wife, Alice, of Charleston, Robert and Renee Abernethy of Cranberry Township, Pa., Sandy and Amy Lou Abernethy of Dallas, Texas; daughter and her husband, Miriam "Mimi" and Evans Deane of Vinton, Va.; grandchildren, Brandie Jarrell of Charleston, Laura Greer of Winston-Salem, N.C., Colin Abernethy of Baltimore, Md., Rob Deane of Vinton, Va., Megan and C.J. Abernethy, both of Cranberry Township, Laney Abernethy of Dallas; great-grandchildren, Ciarra and Sofia Jarrell of Charleston; sisters, Elizabeth A. Thompson of Clover, S.C., Margaret A. Morton of West Columbia, N.C., Eleanor A. Durvin of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Elaine A. Rumburg of Charlotte, N.C. He is also survived by 21 nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, at J.E. Johnson Funeral Home, Kanawha City.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to a charity of your choice.
