George M. Strain, 67, of Fernandina Beach, Florida passed away January 6, 2012 in Jacksonville, Florida. A native of Mobile, Alabama, he was the son of the late William C. and Annie Metzger Strain. Mr. Strain grew up in Mobile and graduated from McGill Institute. George married his college sweetheart and love of his life, Blair Comer, on December 18, 1965. He attended Auburn University and was a member of the Sigma Pi fraternity, where he served as the Social Chairman for several years, which would be no surprise to those who knew him. He graduated from Auburn with both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Civil Engineering. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1968-1970, and remained in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1990, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After his active duty in the U.S. Army, he attended both the Georgia Institute of Technology and Georgia State University, earning multiple Master's Degrees. As a Civil Engineer he worked with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Atlanta, before moving to Fernandina Beach in 1990 where he became the Chief of Plan Formulation for the Southeast District in Jacksonville. Mr. Strain retired after 36 1/2 years of service with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2004. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. He and his wife were longtime members of the Terpsichorean Club, and he was a Master Gardener and an avid fisherman. He loved Seaview Subdivision, planning the Centennial Celebration in October 2011, and fiercely protected the residential nature of Fernandina Beach. He loved God, his family, his beach and his community. He believed he was a very blessed man living in paradise with the love of his life. George was full of life and celebrated by many. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 46 years, Blair C. Strain, his daughter Bettie Blair (Haytham) Gebara, son George A. (Svetlana) Strain, son John C. (Christine) Strain all of Atlanta, Ga., and daughter Mary Margaret (Griff) Braddock of Tampa, Fla., his brothers, William C. Strain, Jr. of Richmond, Va., and David W. Strain of Mobile, Alabama, his sister Juanita Domning of Mullet Point, Alabama and thirteen grandchildren. The family received friends from 5 to 7 PM Monday with a short vigil service held at 6 PM at Oxley-Heard. The mass of celebration was held at 10:00 AM Tuesday at St. Michael Catholic Church with Fr. Jose Kallukelam, officiating. He was laid to rest in Jacksonville National Cemetery with Military Honors. Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors.
