Mrs. Thomas was born in Bushnell, NC on June 16, 1910. She was the daughter of the late Ellis Chastain and Ida Clementine Anthony Monteith. She attended Bushnell School and was a graduate of Sylva Collegiate Institute in 1927. Following her graduation she taught school in Bushnell prior to moving to Bryson City, NC. Mrs. Thomas worked briefly at the Swain County Hospital and with Dr. J.L. Woody. She retired from the ASCS-USDA in 1977 after 24 years of service with the Federal government. Mrs. Thomas was the wife of the late Ervin Mack Thomas who died in 1981. She was the oldest active member of the Bryson City First Baptist Church where she has served as the church clerk. Currently she was treasurer of the Esther Sunday School Class and a member ofthe Baptist Women Union (WMU). Mrs. Thomas served on the Family Service Committee, Home Food Delivery Committee for the Meals on Wheels, also the Food Pantry Committee. She always had a passion for missions. Mrs. Thomas had participated in the Swain County Relay for Life for the past 5 years. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Thomas was also preceded in death by her daughter, June Evelyn Thomas Seay in 1988, grandson, James Ervin Welch in 2003, sisters, Lewellyn M. Gouge, Etta M. Wilhide, Flonnie M. Sherrill, Christine M. Chissom, and brother, Troy P. Monteith. Mrs. Thomas was a very loving Christian mother, grandmother and friend.
