Edward enlisted as a private in Co.C, 18 NC Infantry on 24 April 1861 (originally Columbus County Guard Unit No.3). He was promoted to Corporal by September and then to 1st Sgt. by November 1861. He was wounded at Frayser's Farm on 30 June 1862 and took leave until Nov/Dec 1862. At the battle of Gettysburg the next summer, he was entered on the "Roll of Honor" for his leadership and bravery in Pickett's Charge (his brother Josiah Bird and his cousin Daniel Fowler were both there). By vote of his compatriots, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and continued his service until he was wounded at the siege of Petersburg. The wound caused the amputation of his left leg up to the thigh. He was released from duty on 31 Nov. 1864, a 26 year old who would raise no less than six children as a one-legged farmer.
