Robert A. "Bob" Lambert Sr.

Robert A. "Bob" Lambert Sr., 85, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2011, at Woods Memorial Hospital in Etowah.

He was born in Tazewell County, Va., on Aug. 3, 1926. In his junior year of high school at the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy in World War II. He served on the U.S.S. Balch, a destroyer, serving in the Atlantic escorting convoys from New York Harbor to various North African ports.

After his duty ended, he returned to Richlands High School in Virginia to complete his senior year and lead them to the Southwest Virginia Championship. He signed to play football his freshman year at Furman University in South Carolina and later transferred to Concord University in Athens, W.Va., to play football as a quarterback. He graduated with a degree in social studies and physical education.

His first coaching assignment was with his previous coach and school in Richlands, Va. After two years, he felt confident to coach on his own and was offered the head coaching position at William R. Davy High School in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. His remaining years of coaching and teaching took place at Madisonville, Etowah and McMinn Central high schools. During this period of time, he achieved his master's degree in education administration at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

He helped form and served as the first president of the Sequoyah Conference while at Madisonville. He was a past president of Chestuee Country Club and was on the Etowah Recreation Board and the Etowah Senior Citizens Board of Directors. He was of the Presbyterian faith.

He enjoyed golf, having played in the Tennessee State Father/Son Tournament for several years, as well as visiting with ex-players and students he mentored.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil A. and Gladys Long Lambert; one sibling, C.A. Lambert; one son, Michael Eugene Lambert; one daughter, Patricia Gail Hooper; and one grandson, Petty Officer Beau A. Prince, Navy Information Operations Command.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marie B. Lambert; two sons, Bob Lambert Jr. and his wife, Sandy Casteel Lambert, and Tom Lambert and his wife, Shannon B. Lambert; grandchildren and their spouses, Kristan and Chad Smith, Robert E. and Angie Lambert, Tyler and Fawn Hooper, Blake Lambert, Trent and Samantha Lambert and Kylie A. Lambert; great-grandchildren, Ella Grace Hooper, Lynsi Casteel and Logan Smith; and a step-great-granddaughter, Cara Smith.

Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Wednesday in the South Chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home. The eulogy will be given by Dennis Bordwine, a former student and football player of Mr. Lambert's. Burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Green Hill Cemetery with military honors.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
