His mother was Sigrid Sparre, consort of King Carl XV. He ran away from home in Sweden when he was fourteen years old, eventually making his way to America. He became a pastor in the Swedish Methodist Episcopalian church, married Anna Hoffman and had a daughter Anna and a son John Oscar Karlson. When he died in 1905 he was recognized as the illegitimate son of King Carl XV.
