He was a native of Madison County, and the son of the late Tommy Rochester and Mada Gosnell Rochester. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a son, Gary Alan Gosnell; and brother, Arvil Gosnell.
He was a member of Morning Side Baptist Church. He loved his church, serving as a long time deacon and in many other capacities. He was inducted into the Navy in 1944 serving in WWII. Lyda received the American Area Metal, Asiatic Pacific Metal, Victory in the Raid Motor Momm2C and later retired from MAHEC as a Maintenance Engineer. Lyda loved his family, he was an avid golfer, a fixer of everything, but mostly a giver of himself to others. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bula Bennett Gosnell; sons, Dennis (Nancy) Gosnell of Monroe, N.C. and Mark (Liza) Gosnell of Huntersville, N.C.; sister, Myrtle (Gary) Ealey of Marshall; grandchildren, Justin, Timothy, Holly, Alexander, William, Emily; and two nieces.
Visitation will be held at their home on 48 Swanger Road in Asheville, N.C. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 2, 2011, at Gosnell Cemetery on Arvil Gosnell Road in Madison County, N.C. The Rev. Joe Babb will officiate. Mars Hill VFW Post # 5483 will conduct military graveside rites.
