Son of James R Carver (1809 – 1894) and Eliza Smith (1813 – 1895). Husband of 1)Carolin "Carrie" Louisa Moody (1834 – 1902)and 2nd Abby "Abbie" E Littlefield (1855 – 1911). Children from his first marriage: Emma Frenella Carver (1874 – 1875), Edgar Burpee Carver (1876 – 1877) and Eliza Louise "Teed" Carver (1879 – 1941). No children in 2nd marriage.
Francis Smith Carver was the Adjutant for Captain Edgar Alphonso Burpee in the Civil War. He named his only son "Edgar Burpee Carver" for him, after he returned from the Civil War. Francis S. Carver of Vinalhaven, Maine enlisted in the Union in the Civil War. Served in Maine and was given a DISTINGUISHED SERVICE Citation. Served in Unit Number 1033. Enlisted as a Private on August 25, 1862 at the age of 18. Enlisted in Company I, 19th Infantry Regiment Maine on 25 August 1862. Mustered out Company I, 19th Infantry Regiment Maine on 31 May 1865.

The Vinalhaven Band was organized in the fall of 1870, and on the National Independence Day following Francis Smith Carver headed the procession on a wagon, drawn by 72 yoke of oxen.
He went to Loomis, California area to find gold. He didn't find any. He got gold earrings in the Civil War. When tending sheep a tumbleweed got caught in his earring and ripped off part of his ear.
